Trip highlights

  • Baixa and Chiado on foot
  • Alfama and São Jorge Castle
  • Belém’s riverside monuments
  • A full day in Sintra

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Baixa and the riverfront

Morning: Settle in, then walk from Rossio through Baixa to Praça do Comércio.

Afternoon: Follow the Tagus towards Cais do Sodré, then climb towards Chiado for bookshops and cafés.

Evening: Eat in Chiado or Bairro Alto; avoid committing to a late event after a tiring flight.

Places and stops

  • Rossio Square — A useful central starting point and Sintra departure area.
  • Praça do Comércio — Open riverfront square at the foot of Baixa.

Day 2: Alfama and viewpoints

Morning: Start uphill at Castelo de São Jorge while legs are fresh, then descend through Alfama rather than climbing twice.

Afternoon: See the Sé cathedral area and Miradouro de Santa Luzia, pausing in the small lanes on the way down.

Evening: Have a relaxed dinner around Graça or back near your base.

Places and stops

  • Castelo de São Jorge — Check entry and opening times before choosing a slot.
  • Miradouro de Santa Luzia — Look across Alfama rooftops and the Tagus.
  • Lisbon Cathedral — Stop on the downhill route.

Day 3: Belém without backtracking

Morning: Ride west to Belém and visit the Jerónimos Monastery area first, when queues are usually easier to manage.

Afternoon: Walk along the waterfront past Padrão dos Descobrimentos towards Belém Tower; check whether interiors are open rather than assuming entry.

Evening: Return to central Lisbon for dinner, saving a long cross-city journey at night.

Places and stops

  • Jerónimos Monastery — Book or check current entry arrangements.
  • Padrão dos Descobrimentos — A riverside stop between the monastery and tower.
  • Belém Tower — View the fort from the waterfront even if interior access is limited.

Day 4: Sintra by train

Morning: Take an early train from Rossio to Sintra and go directly to a pre-booked Pena Palace slot; the hill transfer takes time.

Afternoon: Choose one more site such as Quinta da Regaleira, then walk the historic centre before returning by train.

Evening: Keep dinner near the hotel after a full walking day.

Places and stops

  • Pena Palace — Reserve a timed palace entry and allow for the uphill transfer.
  • Quinta da Regaleira — Pair this with the centre instead of attempting every palace.

Day 5: A final Lisbon morning

Morning: Walk the flat Ribeira das Naus promenade or revisit a favourite café before collecting bags.

Afternoon: Take the metro or a pre-arranged transfer to the airport; leave the afternoon flexible for the actual flight time.

Evening: Return to Glasgow.

Places and stops

  • Ribeira das Naus — An easy riverside farewell without a distant detour.
  • Cais do Sodré — Convenient transport interchange for a final central stop.

Return: Keep day five near the centre and allow a separate airport transfer buffer.
