5 days, 4 nights · From London

5 days in New York from London

A first New York visit with one main district per day. The arrival day stays short after the transatlantic flight; a ferry and the subway do more useful work than a costly cross-town taxi itinerary.

Trip highlights

  • Midtown landmarks
  • Lower Manhattan and the harbour
  • Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO
  • Central Park and a museum

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Midtown orientation

Morning: Land, clear arrivals and travel to the hotel.

Afternoon: If energy allows, walk between Grand Central Terminal and Bryant Park; both make a compact first look.

Evening: Early dinner near the hotel to manage jet lag.

Places and stops

  • Grand Central Terminal — Look around the main concourse.
  • Bryant Park — Short outdoor pause close to Midtown streets.

Day 2: Lower Manhattan and the harbour

Morning: Take the subway south for the 9/11 Memorial area; book the museum separately if wanted.

Afternoon: Walk towards Battery Park and choose the free Staten Island Ferry for harbour views or a separately booked Statue of Liberty visit.

Evening: Eat downtown before heading back rather than adding another borough.

Places and stops

  • 9/11 Memorial — Approach respectfully; museum admission is optional.
  • Battery Park — Harbour-side walk.
  • Staten Island Ferry — Public ferry ride with a return crossing.

Day 3: Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO

Morning: Walk Brooklyn Bridge early, allowing time for crowds and photographs.

Afternoon: Explore DUMBO and Brooklyn Bridge Park on the Brooklyn side, then lunch nearby.

Evening: Use the subway back or linger by the waterfront at sunset.

Places and stops

  • Brooklyn Bridge — Cross on foot from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
  • DUMBO — Walk the streets below the bridge.
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park — Waterfront views and space to rest.

Day 4: Central Park and Museum Mile

Morning: Walk a manageable Central Park route around Bethesda Terrace and the lake.

Afternoon: Choose one museum, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, rather than racing through several.

Evening: Return south for an unhurried final meal.

Places and stops

  • Bethesda Terrace — Natural central point in the park.
  • Central Park — Keep the walk to a comfortable section.
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art — Optional paid museum visit with time to focus on a few galleries.

Day 5: A short last morning

Morning: If flight timing permits, revisit a nearby neighbourhood or pick up breakfast without crossing town.

Afternoon: Collect bags and take the airport connection with time for delays.

Evening: Fly back to London.

Places and stops

  • Hotel neighbourhood — Keep the final walk close to luggage storage.
  • New York area airport — Check which airport and terminal your ticket uses.

Indicative budget

£2,200 per person

Indicative per person sharing a room, including London flights, four nights, food, subway fares and selected admissions. New York room taxes, season and exchange rates can change costs; this is not a live price.

Where to stay

  • Midtown or Lower Manhattan base · Near a subway line

A station with straightforward airport and borough connections is more useful than being beside a single attraction.

Getting around

Outbound: Fly from London to a New York area airport; allow for immigration, baggage and the transfer before planning dinner.

Local transport: Use the subway and walk within each district. Choose the appropriate airport rail or bus connection for your actual arrival airport.

Return: Collect luggage and leave a substantial airport transfer buffer for the return transatlantic flight.
