The route at a glance
Day 1: Castle Hill and the Danube
Start in the Castle District around Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Spend the morning on the lanes and viewpoints before continuing towards the Buda Castle palace area. Choose one interior if you want a museum, then come down to the river and cross towards Pest for dinner.
Use a bus or the hill transport if the climb does not suit you. The outdoor viewpoints and courtyards are distinct from paid interiors; check the ticket for the part you actually want.
Day 2: Pest, with one main booked visit
Walk around St Stephen’s Basilica and the Danube embankment. If you have a Parliament tour booked, let its time determine the morning. For the afternoon, choose the Jewish Quarter or take transport towards Heroes’ Square and City Park for a bath visit. These are alternatives on a short weekend.
Do not combine a lengthy bath session, a full Parliament tour and every museum in one day. Leave the evening for dinner and a riverside walk rather than another cross-city journey.
Make the practical details work
Stay near a useful Metro or tram connection in Pest for easy evenings. Buda is atmospheric but check your particular route back after dinner.
Compare ordinary public transport tickets with any sightseeing card against the journeys and admissions you will use. Airport travel can have different ticket rules.
For a lower-cost weekend, prioritise public squares, riverside walks and Castle District viewpoints, then choose one paid highlight. Check bath rules, ticket inclusions and current entry arrangements with the operator.
