A first visit, day by day
Give the memorials one day, choose museums for another and spend the third beyond the Mall. The route assumes three full days and lets you choose how much time to spend inside.
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | The National Mall and memorials |
| 2 | Choose your museums |
| 3 | Capitol Hill or Georgetown |
The National Mall and memorials
Start around the Washington Monument and walk west towards the World War II Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. Stop as you go: the open spaces and changing views are part of the visit. Bring water and choose a shorter section if the weather makes a long walk uncomfortable.
After lunch, choose another memorial that interests you, such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Leave time to sit, read and look around. The map can make this whole area seem smaller than it feels on foot.
Extra time: Return to a favourite memorial towards evening if you would enjoy seeing it in different light.
Choose your museums
Pick one main museum for the morning. The Smithsonian has several separate museums around the Mall, so choose by interest rather than treating the name as a single attraction. Natural history, American history, art and aviation offer very different days.
Break for lunch before deciding on a second visit. If you would rather stay longer in your first museum, do that. Use the museum’s own visitor page for entry arrangements and any reservation requirement.
Extra time: Choose a shorter second museum visit if you still have the energy. Leave the rest for a future trip.
Capitol Hill or Georgetown
For a history-focused morning, explore Capitol Hill and plan any building interior around its official visitor arrangements. Spend the afternoon on nearby streets and a meal. Keeping this day local gives you a different feel from the broad spaces of the Mall.
Alternatively, give Georgetown its own day: browse the streets, find lunch and take a waterfront walk. Choose between these two areas instead of spending the whole day travelling between them. Finish with dinner in the neighbourhood you enjoyed most.
Extra time: With a fourth day, use it for the area you did not choose or a museum you still want to see.
Make the trip work for you
Where to stay
Look for a base near a Metro station that connects conveniently to your chosen sights. Downtown suits Mall-focused visits; a neighbourhood stay can offer a different evening atmosphere. Check the actual walk and the final hotel total.
Getting around
Use Metro and buses to join up the wider city, then walk individual areas. Do not assume every memorial is a short stroll from the next. Plan Georgetown’s connection separately from your Mall days.
What to budget for
Use US dollars for your budget. Decide what to spend on accommodation and meals before adding any paid tours. Check each museum’s own admission and reservation arrangements; a low-cost sightseeing day still needs transport, food and a comfortable place to stay.
Is Washington, DC worth three days?
Three full days let you mix the memorials with museums and a neighbourhood visit. If you only have a weekend, choose one museum and a shorter memorial route rather than compressing every day.
