The route at a glance
Day 1: Castle, Royal Mile and the Old Town
Start with Edinburgh Castle if you want to visit, booking an available time before fixing the rest of the morning. Walk part of the Royal Mile, then choose a route down towards Victoria Street and the Grassmarket. Leave the afternoon for the National Museum of Scotland or more Old Town lanes, according to the weather.
There are slopes, steps and uneven surfaces throughout this area. Ask for a route with fewer stairs if needed, and do not treat a direct line between landmarks as proof of level access.
Day 2: New Town and a city view
Explore the New Town streets and gardens around the centre, then choose Stockbridge and a short Water of Leith walk if you want neighbourhood time. For a skyline view, make Calton Hill a separate outing when conditions suit. Use a bus or taxi to shorten the connecting journeys.
Arthur's Seat is an alternative for people who want a hill walk, not an extra compulsory stop. Check weather, daylight and the current park advice before heading onto exposed paths.
Make the practical details work
The Old Town is atmospheric and convenient for day one; the New Town and areas with good bus links can be easier for arrivals. Check the property's steps and luggage access.
A car brings little benefit for this central weekend. Protect enough time for the station or airport journey, especially around busy events.
Castle admission and accommodation are the main deliberate costs on this route. Festival periods and major events can change room prices sharply; compare actual dates rather than a typical weekend quote.
