THE ITINERARY

Three days, three sides of Istanbul

Keep the old city together, give Galata its own afternoon, then cross the water for a different view of the city. This route is designed for three full sightseeing days; add your arrival and departure time separately.

DAY 1

Sultanahmet: choose your big sights

Begin around Sultanahmet Square. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Basilica Cistern make a natural cluster, so you can spend your morning looking around rather than travelling across town. See the square first, then choose the interiors that interest you most. Trying to give every major monument a full visit in one morning makes the day unnecessarily rushed.

Allow the afternoon for the Basilica Cistern or a longer museum visit, with a proper lunch between them. If Topkapı Palace is your priority, make it the main event and reduce the rest of the schedule. Check its operating days when choosing the order of your trip. Keep mosque visits flexible around worship and follow the instructions at the entrance.

Finish by walking towards Gülhane and the waterfront if you still have energy. It is a gentler end to the day than adding another ticketed attraction. If you are tired, use the tram for part of the return rather than treating the whole route as compulsory walking.

Extra time: Add a wander around the lanes near Sirkeci. Leave a longer palace visit for another day if queues have already used your spare time.

DAY 2

Karaköy and Galata: cafés, hills and harbour views

Start in Karaköy and work uphill towards Galata. These streets reward a slower morning: stop for breakfast, browse a few shops and leave room for a coffee rather than pinning every hour to a landmark. The hill is part of the route, so shorten it if steps or steep streets are difficult for you.

Decide whether going inside Galata Tower matters to you. Seeing the tower from the surrounding streets is still worthwhile; you do not need to buy every viewpoint ticket to enjoy this part of Istanbul. Continue towards Beyoğlu if you want more shopping and street life, or return downhill for time by the water.

Keep the evening in the same area. Karaköy is convenient if you want an easy meal near the harbour; Beyoğlu gives you more streets to explore after dark. Avoid squeezing in a distant palace or another long cross-city journey simply to fill a gap. The official Beyoğlu guide is useful for choosing between its museums, streets and cultural stops.

Extra time: Choose one museum or gallery that fits your interests. Trade it for some wandering time rather than adding it to an already full day.

DAY 3

The Spice Bazaar, a ferry and Kadıköy

Begin around Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar. Browse first, compare prices before buying and keep enough space in the morning for the waterfront. This is a useful place to decide what you actually want to take home rather than buying the first souvenir you see.

Then take a public ferry towards Kadıköy, checking the current departure pier and timetable. The official operator lists a Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü service. Treat the crossing as part of your sightseeing. A regular transport ferry is a different experience from a narrated Bosphorus cruise; choose a dedicated cruise separately if that is what you want.

Spend the afternoon around Kadıköy's market streets, with lunch and time to explore. Continue towards Moda if you want a longer walk, or stay close to the centre for an easier day. Check your return sailing before settling in for dinner, especially if you must collect luggage or travel onward.

Extra time: Give the waterfront a longer wander. If this is also your flight day, skip the Asian-side excursion and keep a generous airport buffer instead.

Make the route work for you

Getting around without a hire car

Walking, trams and ferries are a practical combination for this route. Metro Istanbul's T1 line information includes Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Karaköy. Check current service notices before travelling. Traffic can make road journeys unpredictable, so choose accommodation near useful transport rather than planning to take taxis between every sight.

Where to base yourself

Sultanahmet suits a first visit focused on the old city. Karaköy is a useful alternative if cafés, ferries and evenings across the Golden Horn matter more to you. Galata can be appealing, but look carefully at the walk to your accommodation if you have luggage or limited mobility. Choose the area before comparing individual rooms.

What to spend on

Set aside separate amounts for accommodation, meals, local transport and the paid attractions you actually want to enter. Add a buffer for transfers and changes of plan. A city pass only makes sense if its current inclusions match your chosen visits; compare it with buying those tickets individually. This guide does not assume a particular departure country or a live airfare.

Is three days enough?

Three full days give you a good introduction to the old city, Galata and the waterfront. If your booking is only two nights with late arrival and early departure, use the first day's route as the core and choose one other neighbourhood. Save the rest for a longer visit.
