THE ITINERARY

A route with room to enjoy it

Four full sightseeing days, grouped by neighbourhood: Alfama, the centre, Belém and a flexible final day. If your four days include flights, shorten the last day rather than racing across town.

DAY 1

Alfama, viewpoints and the castle

Start around the cathedral and work uphill through Alfama towards Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Pause at one viewpoint instead of treating every terrace as a separate attraction. The steep lanes and uneven paving make this a walking day with frequent breaks.

Choose whether Castelo de São Jorge is your main paid visit. If it is, leave a substantial part of the afternoon for the castle and check entry arrangements before setting out. Otherwise, keep the afternoon for Alfama’s lanes and an unhurried meal. Finish near your accommodation rather than adding a cross-city evening excursion.

If you have more energy: Choose a booked fado performance if music matters to you. Check what the ticket includes and leave the rest of the evening free.

DAY 2

Baixa, Chiado and the river

Begin at Praça do Comércio, then walk through Baixa towards Rossio. Continue uphill to Chiado for bookshops, cafés and time to browse. This keeps the morning in one compact part of Lisbon instead of repeatedly crossing the city.

After lunch, choose a museum or spend the afternoon on the waterfront around Cais do Sodré. A famous tram ride is optional: if the queue consumes the time you wanted for exploring, use another transport connection and keep moving. Make any restaurant booking around the neighbourhood where you finish.

If you have more energy: Add a viewpoint above Chiado if your legs are comfortable with another climb; skip it on a hot or tiring day.

DAY 3

Belém without a monument marathon

Travel west for a day around Belém. Carris lists the 15E route through Cais do Sodré, Belém and Mosteiro Jerónimos; check its service notices on your travel date. Do not assume a published route guarantees an uninterrupted tram journey.

Pick one main interior visit, such as the Jerónimos cloister or a museum, and check opening days and tickets directly. Add the riverfront and a pastry stop around it. Treat the tower area as a waterfront stop unless you have separately confirmed public access. Leave time to return to central Lisbon without a dinner-time rush.

If you have more energy: Extend the waterfront walk towards MAAT if the weather and your energy suit it, instead of adding another timed ticket.

DAY 4

A personal final day

Use this day for what you have enjoyed most: a second slow neighbourhood walk, a museum you deliberately left out, or a long lunch and riverside afternoon. Keeping one flexible day also gives you room to move Belém if a closure or poor weather disrupts the original order.

If you want Sintra, make it a replacement full-day excursion with its own transport and admission plan. Do not append it to a half-day in Lisbon. On a departure day, stay near your base, collect luggage early and plan the airport journey around your actual flight and check-in requirements.

If you have more energy: Browse locally made ceramics or food gifts, leaving room in your luggage and time to return for your bags.

Plan the practical details

Where to stay

For a first visit, compare accommodation around Baixa or Chiado for central access, or near a useful metro stop if value matters more. Check the final walk to the property: a short distance can still involve steps and a steep climb. Ask the property about step-free access if needed.

Transport and budget

Budget separately for your room, meals, local transport and chosen paid attractions. Compare a transport or sightseeing pass against the visits you will actually make; do not buy one only because it bundles many sights. Keep a small contingency for a taxi when hills, luggage or weather change the plan.

Before you go

Check attraction opening days, transport notices and any timed entry directly. This is an editorial route suggestion, not a booked package or a claim of current availability.
