A route with room to enjoy it
Four full days divided between eastern Kyoto, Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and a flexible final day. Keep each day geographically focused and leave room for temple visits, meals and public transport.
Higashiyama and Gion
Make eastern Kyoto the focus. Choose Kiyomizu-dera as the main temple visit and check its official opening arrangements. Explore the surrounding public streets slowly, allowing time for slopes, steps and busy stretches rather than scheduling a different temple every hour.
Continue towards Yasaka Shrine and Gion if you have the energy. Treat Gion as a living neighbourhood: follow posted access and photography rules, keep doorways clear and do not pursue or obstruct people for photographs. End with dinner in the centre instead of travelling to a distant district for another attraction.
If you have more energy: Add a short riverside walk after dinner. Skip it if the morning’s hills have already made this a long day.
Arashiyama and the river
Keep the day in western Kyoto. Plan a rail connection to the Arashiyama area, checking which station is useful for your chosen first stop. Start with the bamboo grove and a visit you actively want, such as Tenryu-ji, rather than assuming the grove alone needs a whole day.
Allow time around Togetsu-kyo Bridge and the river, with a sit-down lunch or tea break. Kyoto’s official area guide places further sights in the wider Saga district: choose one only after checking the distance and access. Return to the centre before you become too tired for the transport journey.
If you have more energy: Explore farther into Saga if you prefer a longer walk. Keep to public paths and leave bamboo and other plants untouched.
Fushimi Inari at your own pace
Head south to Fushimi Inari Taisha. Decide in advance whether you want a shorter visit through the lower shrine area or a longer walk on the mountain paths. A full ascent is optional; comfortable shoes, weather and your own stamina should decide the route.
Keep the afternoon loose. Return to central Kyoto for lunch and browsing, or plan a separate visit to the wider Fushimi district if its canals and sake heritage interest you. These are distinct stops: check the onward connection rather than assuming everything called Fushimi sits beside the shrine.
If you have more energy: Choose a suitable cultural visit in Fushimi and check opening arrangements before travelling. Leave time for the return journey.
One last district, or room to slow down
Use the final full day for a northern or central sight that suits your interests. If Kinkaku-ji is your priority, build the morning around it and check the transport route from your accommodation. Avoid stacking it with a distant excursion just because both appear on a list of highlights.
Alternatively, spend the day on central shops, a museum and a meal you have booked. If four days include arrival or departure, use this day as the buffer. Store luggage before sightseeing and check the connection for your onward train or airport; a city bus is not a luggage-transfer plan.
If you have more energy: Revisit a favourite street or garden near your base instead of adding another long transfer.
Plan the practical details
Choose a connected base
Compare the Kyoto Station area for onward connections with central areas around Shijo or Sanjo for evening convenience. Check the actual station exit and final walk to your accommodation. A quiet property far from a station may add daily travel that a short stay does not need.
Trains, buses and spending
Use trains and subways for the useful parts of each journey, adding buses where they help. Kyoto’s official guidance recommends combining transport types and warns of crowding. Check pass coverage rather than assuming every operator is included. Budget for selected temple admissions, transport, meals and accommodation separately.
Respect the neighbourhood
Follow signs on private lanes and photography restrictions, keep public transport clear of large bags and check the city’s responsible-travel guidance. This plan offers choices, not guaranteed opening hours or bookings.
